HC Deb 23 February 1944 vol 397 c853

Ordered: That the Proceedings on the Income Tax (Offices and Employment) Bill be exempted, at this day's Sitting, from the provisions of the Standing Order (Sittings of the House)."—[Mr. Eden.]

Mr. Bowles

On a point of Order. May I move the following Motion: That the proceedings on any Motion for the Adjournment of the House moved by a Minister of the Crown be exempted at this day's Sitting from the—

Mr. Speaker

The hon. Member cannot move a Motion as a point of Order. This is not the place for moving it.

Mr. Bowles

Before the Patronage Secretary moves "That this House do now adjourn" may I not move this Motion?

Mr. Speaker

No, it is not on the Order Paper and I could not accept such a Motion at short notice.

Mr. Bowles

On a point of Order. I am sure it is within the recollection of the House that the Leader of the House, if he thinks in the course of the Debate that it might be desirable to extend the Debate for two hours, does so without any notice to the House at all and without any notice on the Order Paper.

Mr. Speaker

That can only be done by a Minister of the Crown, not by a Private Member.

Mr. Bowles

Will the Leader of the House see his way to move a Motion similar to that which he moved yesterday to extend the time for two hours?

Mr. Eden

We have already passed the Motion on the Paper which deals with the Business for to-day.

Mr. Silverman

Is there anything in the Motion on Business which we have passed, which necessarily prevents the Leader of the House, if he should think fit, now, or at a later stage, from moving to extend for two hours the time devoted to consideration of the war situation?

Mr. Speaker

Only one such Motion may be moved each day.
