HC Deb 09 February 1944 vol 396 cc1769-70
54. Mr. Wootton-Davies

asked the Minister of Food what was the average price of West African palm oil to the consumer in June, 1939, and in December, 1943.

Colonel Llewellin

The figures art £12 10s. a ton and £42 5s. a ton respectively.

Mr. Wootton-Davies

Will the Minister explain how this increase of some 350 per cent. takes place, and what extra the native in West Africa is getting and whether his Ministry is making any profit on this material?

Colonel Llewellin

No, we are now buying these materials from a large number of countries in the world. The price varies between different places and we even them out so as not to have a loss for the Exchequer.
