§ 6. Mr. Sorensenasked the Minister of Labour whether he has any approximate estimate of the number of young people under 16 years of age now working more than 44 hours per week and those between 16 and 17 years of age working more than 48 hours per week; and what action has been taken to see that employers conform to the necessity of not employing young people for excessive hours of labour.
§ Mr. BevinI regret that information on which to base such an estimate is not available. The hours of young persons in factories are closely watched through the factory inspectorate.
§ Mr. SorensenIs the Minister aware that complaints have been made in certain directions by organisations interested in young people, and that some of these young people are working very long hours?
§ Mr. BevinA continuous watch is kept, and I keep asking for specific cases, but, in the main, I get only generalities. If hon. Members send me specific cases, I will look into them.
