HC Deb 03 February 1944 vol 396 cc1397-8
52. Mr. Granville

asked the Minister of Agriculture when he proposes setting up the cost investigating system in conjunction with the National Farmers' Union and the Agricultural Workers' Union and other bodies in order that his Department, agriculture and public opinion may be fully informed of the facts in relation to the present commodity schemes and future long-term agricultural policy.

54. Mr. De la Bère

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he now proposes to have further discussions with the National Farmers' Union in connection with the adjustment of farm prices; and if at the same time he will consider the views of the National Union of Agricultural Workers.

Mr. Hudson

I have nothing at present to add to the statements made by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor and myself during the Debate on 26th January, but I have already had an informal talk with the President of the National Farmers' Union.

Mr. Granville

In the speech referred to, there is no mention of the Agricultural Workers' Union being consulted. Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether it is the intention to consult this Union?

Mr. Hudson

I said some time ago that all sections of the industry would be consulted about post-war policy.

Mr. De la Bère

Is my right hon. Friend aware that this is vital in the national interest for the restoration of confidence? Will he endeavour to exercise unshakeable sanity, invincible patience and tireless good will?

Mr. Granville

Will the right hon. Gentleman give us an assurance that on the specific question of setting up a cost investigating system, he will consult with the Agricultural Workers' Union?

Mr. Hudson

I do not propose to limit myself in any way by giving assurances. I propose to carry out to the best of my ability the promise that I made.

Mr. Granville

On a point of Order. I beg to give notice that I will raise this matter on the Adjournment at the first opportunity.
