HC Deb 02 February 1944 vol 396 cc1255-6
17. Colonel Greenwell

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport, if, in connection with the Government's plans for post-war main road development, he will consider reconstructing the Roman road from Piercebridge through Corbridge to Jed-burgh as a means of shortening greatly the distance from London to Edinburgh by road and of avoiding the congested industrial area of the North-east.

Mr. Noel-Baker

Yes, Sir. I will certainly bear in mind the proposal made by my hon. and gallant Friend.

Colonel Greenwell

Does my hon. Friend appreciate that this does not involve the building of an entirely new road, but merely the adaptation of roads which at present exist but which are not suitable for carrying large volumes of heavy traffic?

Mr. Noel-Baker

Yes, Sir, and I can tell my hon. and gallant Friend that we have actually already considered this route in connection with the extension of new trunk roads.
