HC Deb 02 February 1944 vol 396 cc1257-8
23. Mr. Hewlett

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that letters from South Africa take two to three months to reach this country; and whether he will take steps to accelerate transport.

The Postmaster-General (Captain Crookshank)

I am aware that letters from South Africa sometimes take over two months in transmission but the average time recently has been 45 days. The South African Post Office which is responsible for the homeward service takes advantage of every suitable opportunity for despatching the mails.

Sir Alfred Beit

Can my right hon. and gallant Friend say what is the delay in the air-mail from South Africa?

Captain Crookshank

This refers to ordinary letters and not air-mail.
