HC Deb 06 December 1944 vol 406 c511
23. Miss Ward

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether any decision has yet been come to with regard to the payment of allowances to members of his Department who are posted to the Foreign Office from service abroad.

Mr. Eden

Yes, Sir. In accordance with the proposals made in Command 6420 it has been decided that members of the senior branch of the Foreign Service of the rank of Counsellor and below, who are transferred to the Foreign Office from posts abroad, should receive transfer grants—the amounts of whch are now under discussion—in respect of the extra expenditure in which they are involved as a result of their obligation to serve abroad at any time and place as the public interest requires.

Miss Ward

Will my right hon. Friend make representations to the Treasury to ensure that these grants are adequate and generous?

Mr. Eden

My hon. Friend will see from my answer that it has been agreed that such grants shall be made—there is no dispute about that—and we are now discussing the amount.
