HC Deb 20 April 1944 vol 399 c353
19. Miss Ward

asked the Secretary of State for India what steps are being taken in India to increase the number of doctors and to raise the standard of medical education.

Mr. Amery

Future developments are being considered by a committee presided over by Sir Joseph Bhore. Among the many subjects which are engaging its attention are the standards of medical education and the increase of facilities for medical relief in rural areas.

Miss Ward

Will any steps be taken quickly owing to the shortage of medical personnel in India?

Mr. Amery

Yes. I believe all possible steps are being taken, including the fuller use of licentiate doctors and an improvement in their standard of training.

Major-General Sir Alfred Knox

Is not a decrease in population more important than an increase in doctors?
