HC Deb 19 April 1944 vol 399 cc186-7
29. Mr. Thorne

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport how many canal boats or barges are now being used between London and Birmingham; and how many women are working upon them.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport (Mr. Noel-Baker)

The through journey between London and Birmingham is made by narrow canal boats which operate in pairs. Six pairs of boats are now worked by women crews; each crew consists of three. Most other boats are manned by family crews, but I regret that I am unable to say how many women there may be among them.
