HC Deb 05 April 1944 vol 398 cc1980-1
14. Mr. Keeling

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, in what circumstances railings in rural areas are exempted from removal; and whether substitutes are provided when railings essential to the use of land have been removed.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works (Mr. Hicks)

May I refer the hon. Member to the reply which I gave him on 17th December last. The examples given in that reply and the statement as to the provision of substitutes would operate in rural areas where applicable. Provision is made for the retention of gates and railings necessary to protect growing crops, including vegetable crops. The original directions safeguarded railings, etc., required to enclose cattle, or for public safety, or which are of artistic merit or historic interest.
