HC Deb 05 April 1944 vol 398 c1984
18. Major Lyons

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies in view of the fact that in Tanganyika the ratio of publicly-owned hospital beds to the total African population is one to 2,725 compared to that in Kenya of one to 1,100 what plans he has sanctioned for early improvement.

Colonel Stanley

The Tanganyika Government is now engaged in drawing up its general plans for social and economic development, including the extension of medical services. Pending their submission, no proposals for increased hospital facilities have been approved. The present shortage of medical officers under war conditions is, however, so acute that it would not be possible to provide the staff necessary for any considerable expansion of hospital facilities.

Major Lyons

Would the right hon. and gallant Gentleman try to speed up, so far as war conditions permit, the plans which he says are under review?

Colonel Stanley

I am doing all I can to speed up the plans, but in view of this shortage, it is no good holding out any hope that it would be possible to implement any large plan under war conditions.
