HC Deb 23 September 1943 vol 392 cc373-4
41. Professor Savory

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he can give (the percentage of pupils proceeding from the primary to the different categories of secondary schools in England and Wales during the years 1938, 1939, 1940, 1941 and 1942?

Mr. Butler

Of the pupils who in 1938 were in the age group 11–12, at which the primary stage normally ends, 9.5 per cent. proceeded to secondary schools, 2.5 per cent. proceeded later to junior technical and similar schools, while the remainder continued their education in public elementary schools: Of those who remained in elementary schools, about half were in reorganised senior schools or departments. I regret that no figures are available for the years subsequent to 1938.
