HC Deb 22 September 1943 vol 392 c187
29. Mr. Creech Jones

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies when it is proposed to establish workmen's compensation law in Kenya; and whether the setting up of a labour advisory board is under consideration?

Mr. Emrys-Evans

Owing to pressing preoccupations connected with the war, workmen's compensation legislation has not yet been introduced in Kenya. But in the meantime, by agreement with employers, compensation claims are being paid on the lines laid down in model legislation; in some cases, even where claims would not be statutorily covered. Legislation will be proceeded with as soon as conditions permit. It is understood that the appointment of a Labour Advisory Board will shortly be announced.

Mr. Creech Jones

Will my hon. Friend make representations that at an early date a workmen's compensation law should be enacted?

Mr. Emrys-Evans

Owing to the complex and technical character of the trade union legislation, it is not possible to call together the ad hoc committee which is dealing with this question. The members have had to deal with various questions connected with food. It is hoped that will be done as soon as possible.
