HC Deb 21 October 1943 vol 392 cc1483-4
8. Sir Leonard Lyle

asked the Minister of Labour whether, in supplying nurse for private nursing, his Appointments Department accept the wage scales laid down in the Rushcliffe Report and, if not, what increase is prescribed; whether the period of work is 48 hours a week or 96 a fortnight; and whether any overtime is permitted if the nurse is anxious to render additional and emergency service to her patient?

Mr. Bevin:

When permitting a nurse who is covered by the Control of Engagement Order to accept or seek private engagement, my Department does not attempt to impose conditions as to the wages or conditions of employment to be observed.

Sir L. Lyle

In order to Clarify the position, as there seems to be some uncertainty, will the Minister say whether it is possible for a nursing agency which supplies hospital nurses still to function subject to the approval of the Appointments Department of the Ministry of Labour?

Mr. Bevin

Yes, it can function outside the Control of Engagement Order.
