HC Deb 21 October 1943 vol 392 c1519
56. Sir H. Williams

asked the Minister of Health whether, having regard to the ageing of the population and the resultant need for housing accommodation for old-age pensioners, married couples, widowers, widows, bachelors and spinsters, his Department is considering the design of buildings of the almshouse type for this growing class of the community?

Mr. E. Brown

A Sub-committee of my Central Housing Advisory Committee under the chairmanship of Lord Dudley, is considering the whole question of the design of dwellings for old people and single persons.

Sir H. Williams

I take it that the right hon. Gentleman's special consideration takes into account that the probability is that the major demand after the war will be for houses for the aged population?

Mr. Brown

It is realised that that is a very important element in the consideration.

Mr. Shinwell

Shall we not all be old age pensioners before the houses are provided?

Mr. Brown

I trust not.
