HC Deb 20 October 1943 vol 392 cc1371-2
34. Mr. Mander

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the present position with regard to the growing of tobacco in the British Virgin Islands; and whether the growers and manufacturers have been consulted with regard to the future?

The Under-Secretary of State for Dominions Affairs (Mr. Emry's-Evans)

I have been asked to reply. There is nothing to add to the reply given to my hon. Friend on 5th May. My right hon. and gallant Friend has not yet heard from the Governor of the Leeward Islands the outcome of the consultations with the Inspector-General of Agriculture to which he referred in that reply.

Mr. Mander

Will my hon. Friend deal with the second part of the Question, as to whether there have been consultations with the manufacturers and growers?

Mr. Emrys-Evans

I think that is covered by my reply. We will make further inquiries from the Governor.

Mr. Riley

Is the hon. Member aware that there is great dissatisfaction in the Virgin Islands about tobacco-growing being restricted; and will the matter be looked into?
