HC Deb 11 November 1943 vol 393 c1289
61. Mr. Astor

asked the Home Secretary whether, in view of the inefficiency of disinfestation processes, he will ensure that all bed boards in prisons which are found to contain insect life are destroyed?

Mr. H. Morrison

The Prison Commissioners have recently been in touch with the Medical Research Council on this subject and the disinfestation of bed boards is now proceeding on new lines, the results of which have so far been most encouraging. In view of the impossibility of replacing these boards in present circumstances, it would not be right to destroy those which can be effectively treated, but my hon. Friend can be assured that no pains are spared to deal with this matter thoroughly.

Mr. Astor

Is not imprisonment sufficient punishment without additional irritation?
