HC Deb 09 November 1943 vol 393 cc1060-1
7. Mr. Lindsay

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many children from primary and secondary schools, respectively, volunteered this summer to assist in gathering the harvest?

Mr. Johnston

The school authorities, teachers and pupils made an excellent response to the national appeal. No fewer than 61,163 schoolchildren assisted this year in the ingathering of the fruit, grain and potato harvests in Scotland. Separate figures are not available for the primary and secondary divisions of schools.

Mr. Lindsay

In view of this magnificent response, would the Minister next year consider releasing young workers from the Clyde and other industries for this same purpose?

Mr. Johnston

I would like to look at that question and at the effect it would have on the production of other commodities.
