HC Deb 30 March 1943 vol 388 c25
35. Mr. Hannah

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether he is aware that the schemes of local authorities to provide holidays at home are being seriously interfered with by the refusal of petrol for bands; and will he allow fuel for the transport of musicians and instruments required for this purpose?

Major Lloyd George

I have no indication that any local authority is in difficulties on this account. I shall be happy to consider any case of which my hon. Friend will give me particulars.

36. Mr. Hannah

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether he is aware that the refusal of petrol for the movement of bands, which constitute only a part-time occupation for their owners, is in some cases requiring more fuel to be used from the hiring of taxi-cabs, which may have to make several journeys instead of only one; and will he look into the whole matter?

Major Lloyd George

I do not regard the transport of members of a part-time band as justifying an allowance for a private car, and I have no reason to believe that a net economy would be achieved by granting petrol for this purpose.

Mr. Hannah

Will the Government consider the whole question of making holidays at home a real success this year?

Major Lloyd George

We have made arrangements with the local authorities for that purpose, and we have had already from the hon. Gentleman's own constituency a reply saying that they were very pleased with the arrangements that we had made.

Mr. Hannah

Thank you.
