HC Deb 25 March 1943 vol 387 c1775
82. Mr. Hannah

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether, in making new schemes for the rationalisation of retail deliveries, the Government undertakes to find other employment for small traders deprived of their living through no fault of their own?

The Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport (Mr. Noel-Baker)

So far as I am aware, very few traders have been deprived of their living by schemes for the rationalisation of retail deliveries. I must, however, remind my hon. Friend that in addition to saving petrol and rubber, these schemes are also intended to make the greatest economy of man-power which is consistent with the provision of services essential to the community. I would also remind him that there is now employment for any man or woman who is able to work.
