HC Deb 29 July 1943 vol 391 c1753
2. Mr. Summers

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will refrain from calling up or directing to other work married women who are maintaining their husbands' businesses during their absence in the Forces in cases where the businesses would have to close down if the wives were not allowed to carry on?

The Minister of Labour (Mr. Ernest Bevin)

Before action is taken to withdraw a woman in these circumstances, she is given an opportunity of applying for her case to be considered on grounds of exceptional business hardship.

Mr. Summers

Will the Minister give more guidance to the tribunals dealing with this question, as great hardship is caused, not only to the individuals who are called up, but to those who are dependent upon them?

Mr. Bevin

I think the instructions are fairly explicit.
