HC Deb 28 July 1943 vol 391 cc1579-80
68. Mr. Keeling

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether there is any restriction in practice, other than the lack of cargo space, on the importation of wine from countries in the sterling area?

Mr. Mabane

The chief restriction is the very limited amount of shipping space available after provision has been made for priority cargo. The actual amount of imports is regulated by quotas which are reviewed from time to time in the light of existing circumstances.

Mr. Keeling

Can my hon. Friend give an assurance that any formalities will be completed in advance, so that no opportunity of occupying empty space may be missed?

Miss Rathbone

Is it really necessary to import wines at the risk of sailors' lives?

Commander Agnew

Is the hon. Lady aware that sailors like wine as much as other people?
