HC Deb 28 July 1943 vol 391 cc1574-5
58. Mr. Sexton

asked the Minister of Supply what progress is being made in the manufacture in Britain of calcium carbide; and what percentage of the nation's requirements is now being manufactured in this country?

The Minister of Supply (Sir Andrew Duncan)

There are two factories in this country for the production of calcium carbide, one of which is being extended, but it would not be in the public interest to give particulars of home output or of imports.

Mr. Sexton

Is the question of expansion of the home manufacture of calcium carbide being considered by the Government as part of a post-war employment programme?

Sir A. Duncan

That expansion is entirely for war purposes.
