HC Deb 21 July 1943 vol 391 c866
2. Mr. Astor

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what has been the general trend in the cost of living since the allied occupation of French North Africa?

Mr. Eden

No weighted index of the cost of living in French North Africa exists. I am informed, however, that prices of a considerable quantity of supplies imported by the Allies since last November have been maintained at pre-November levels, and rents have been stabilised since April 5th. On the other hand the prices of certain locally produced commodities have increased. In Tunisia the cost of living, which advanced very greatly under German occupation, has fallen since the liberation.
