§ 57. Mr. Leslieasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has any information respecting the decision of the Isle of Man authority to grant to old age pensioners a supplementary allowance of is. a week as tobacco money; and whether he will consider making a similar allowance to old age pensioners within his jurisdiction?
§ Sir K. WoodI understand that the increase of Is. in supplementary pension rates which has recently come into force in the Isle of Man was granted to meet the general cost of living without special reference to tobacco. As regards the second part of the Question, I cannot add to the statements already made in debate on this matter.
§ Mr. LeslieWould it not be a nice gesture to old age pensioners if the Chancellor could see his way to make the slight concession referred to in the Question?
§ Sir K. WoodI would be glad to carry out the latter part of my hon. Friend's Question if I could, but the matter has already been fully discussed.
§ Mr. ThorneIs the Chancellor aware that old age pensioners think he is the meanest man on earth?
