HC Deb 20 July 1943 vol 391 cc681-2
37. Mr. Foster

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power why work on colliery canteens has been temporarily suspended; when this work is likely to be resumed; and whether similar restrictions have been placed upon canteen development at other industrial undertakings?

Major Lloyd George

All pit canteen works in progress have continued without interruption, and the suspension was only in respect to the commencement of new works, and operated only from 2nd July to 17th July. It was applied in order to allow a readjustment of the programme to meet a reduced allocation of building labour for the third quarter of the year. I have no corresponding information as to the situation in other industries.

Mr. Foster

Is the Minister not aware that there are many schemes which it has taken two or three years to prepare, and that although work has not actually begun, they are ready to begin work, and now that work has been suspended it has caused, or will cause, keen disappointment to the miners concerned? Will steps be taken to see that work is renewed as early as possible?

Major Lloyd George

If the hon. Member will read the answer, he will find that suspension concerned only work not already started and lasted only for a fortnight.
