HC Deb 20 July 1943 vol 391 cc679-80
33. Major Lloyd

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what percentage of youths in the age groups available are members of the Air Training Corps in the Glasgow Corporation area compared respectively, with the rest of Scotland, with Edinburgh and with an average of the comparable big cities in England?

Mr. Johnston

The percentage of youths in the age groups available who are members of the Air Training Corps is 5.4 in Glasgow, 14.4 in the rest of Scotland, and 13.1 in Edinburgh. I must refer the hon. and gallant Member to my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Education for similar information regarding comparable big cities in England.

Major Lloyd

Is my right hon. Friend aware that the schools under the control of Glasgow Corporation are forbidden to have A.T.C. units and that the school buildings are forbidden to the A.T.C.? Is not this a primary factor in the Glasgow figure being so low?

Mr. Johnston

I have no information on that point, and if my hon. and gallant Friend will be good enough to put down a Question, I will get an answer for him.

Major Lloyd

If it needs to wait for that, will my right hon. Friend spur the Glasgow Corporation to do their duty?

Mr. Johnston

That was not the original Question. I have answered the Question on the Paper.
