HC Deb 08 July 1943 vol 390 cc2259-60
63. Major Petherick

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware of the plight of Service pensioners domiciled in Eire as the result of the high cost of living there; and whether, while disclaiming any responsibility for the policy of the Irish Government which has brought this about, he will, as a gesture towards these and other loyal Irishmen who have fought or are fighting, consider an increase in such pensions?

Sir K. Wood

I fear I could not entertain my hon. and gallant Friend's proposal.

Major Petherick

Is my right hon. Friend aware that Irishmen who are Service pensioners in Eire are having a very difficult time, owing to the enormous increase in the cost of living, and cannot live on their pensions? Will he go into the matter with some of those involved and see whether he can possibly be persuaded to do something about it?

Sir K. Wood

I think my hon. and gallant Friend will appreciate that it is very difficult for me to make a special selection in these matters.
