§ The Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Herbert Morrison)May I ask leave to make a personal statement? In the OFFICIAL REPORT of 30th June I am by some inadvertence reported as having said that I did business with my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for Petersfield (Sir G. Jeffreys) when he was running Civil Defence in Hampshire, and that he has been resisting my doing business with anyone else ever since. Some misunderstanding of what I said must have occurred, for I have no recollection of having used the words, nor could I say what they meant if I had used them. I have therefore arranged for the remarks to be deleted from the bound Volume of the OFFICIAL REPORT. I take the opportunity of saying that my hon. and gallant Friend has always been most co-operative, and I should certainly have never made such an accusation against him, and I am happy to say that he is still chairman of the Hampshire Emergency Committee.
§ General Sir George JeffreysMay I be allowed to thank my right hon. Friend for the explanation he has given? I heard the speech, and I was sure there was some mistake. I am very appreciative of his action to-day.
