Captain Gammansasked the Secretary of State for India what percentage of the Indian Army has been recruited from each of the main Provinces of India and from the Kingdom of Nepal; and what is the percentage of Hindus, Mahomedans and other religious groups up to the last date for which figures are available?

§ Following is the reply:
§ Precise figures are not available, but the latest information I have shows that of the Indian Army roughtly:
- 50 per cent, come from the Punjab;
- 15 per cent. come from the United Provinces;
- 10 per cent, each from Madras and Bombay Presidencies;
- 5 per cent. from the North-West Frontier Province;
- 3 per cent. from Ajmer and Merwara;
- 2 per cent. from Bengal;
- 5 per cent. from Central Provinces, Berar, Assam, Bihar and Orissa,
§ The answer to the second part of the Question is:
- Mohammedans, about 34 per cent.
- Hindus, including Gurkhas, 50 per cent.
- Sikhs, 10 per cent.
- Other religious groups, including Christians, 6 per cent.
§ 60. Mr. Sorensenasked the Secretary of State for India the number of Indians holding His Majesty's commissions; the number of decorations or honours won in the war for meritorious or courageous action; the number of killed, wounded, missing and prisoners; and whether he has reports showing how Indian prisoners are being treated by respective enemy Powers?
