HC Deb 06 July 1943 vol 390 c1922
32. Mr. Messer

asked the Secretary of State for War why medical officers in the Home Guard in Northern Ireland are granted only honorary rank whilst those in England are granted commissions; and whether he proposes to take steps to co[...]rect this anomaly?

Mr. A. Henderson

For administrative convenience, the Ulster Home Guard forms part of the Ulster Special Constabulary, and no question of granting commissions in the Army can arise until such time as that force is mustered when it becomes an integral part of the Armed Forces of the Crown.

Mr. Messer

Is it not part of the Armed Forces, even although attached to the Irish Constabulary?

Mr. Henderson

No, but when it Is mustered it will become part of the Armed Forces.

Mr. Messer

Does that mean that then they will be granted commissions?

Mr. Henderson

Yes, Sir.
