§ 5. Mr. Manderasked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware of the fact that certain factories in the Midlands, where decisions have been given by appeal tribunals under the Essential Work Order for the reinstatement of men, the practice continues to exist of placing them on the pay roll and not providing them with any work to do; and what steps he is taking to put an end to this practice?
Mr. MeCorquodaleOn this matter generally I would refer to the reply given to the hon. Member for West Willesden (Mr. Viant) on 10th June. If my hon. Friend will let me have particulars of any cases he has in mind, I will be happy to have inquiries made.
§ Mr. ManderI will certainly do that, but will the hon. Gentleman give as much publicity to this matter as he can, because there are a certain number of people, including even National Service officers, who appear to be unaware of the exact position?
§ Mr. McCorquodaleYes, Sir.
§ Mr. George GriffithsWill the hon. Gentleman see in the future that if these people persist in not carrying out the provisions of the Essential Work Order, they will be jailed as well as the men?
