44. Mr. De la Bèreasked the President of the Board of Education whether he will now give consideration to the question of an increase in pension to teachers who have had to retire through ill-health, in view of the great hardship which is being experienced by a number of these teachers who have given many years of devoted service?
§ The President of the Board of Education (Mr. Butler)The position of these teachers cannot be considered in isolation from that of other state pensioners. The views of His Majesty's Government on this subject have been repeatedly stated, and I would refer my hon. Friend to the Report of the Debate on the motion for the Adjournment on 15th October last.
Mr. De la BèreAre we forever to go on debating this matter while nothing is done for these poor teachers who are in distress? Will the right hon. Gentleman come to their aid? It is no good going on debating. They cannot live on debates.
§ Mr. W. BrownWill the right hon. Gentleman approach the Chancellor of the Exchequer to see that not only these cases but the cases of other pensioners are dealt with?
