HC Deb 26 January 1943 vol 386 c353
40. Mr. Thorne

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether the police have taken any action against the man who threw bread at the Entertainments National Service Association party who were going to give an entertainment in the Potteries?

The Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Peake)

My information is that while the stage was being prepared for an entertainment in the canteen someone threw to a friend sitting at an adjoining table a piece of bread, which rebounded on to the stage. As it does not appear that any question arises either of an assault or of waste of bread, there is no occasion for any action by the police.

Mr. Thorne

I cannot understand that answer at all, because it is perfectly evident that if I threw a piece of bread at the right hon. Gentleman, it would be a waste of bread.
