HC Deb 25 February 1943 vol 387 c272
3. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware of the value to the war effort and the people's appreciation of the organisation of the relaxation and holiday periods last summer; is it intended to repeat the appeal made to all local authorities; and will he consider doing this on a larger scale and in the evenings, in particular, where large numbers of people are living many miles away from home?

Mr. Bevin

Yes, Sir. I appreciate highly the provision made last summer to enable workers to spend enjoyable holidays at home. I hope to see the movement extended this year, both as regard the annual holidays and the Bank Holiday periods, and I have already arranged, in consultation with my right hon. Friend the Minister of Health, to seek the renewed co-operation of the local authorities in the matter. Last summer's programmes in many places included very successful arrangements for outdoor sport and entertainment in the evenings, and I will gladly commend my hon. Friend's suggestion on this point to authorities who may not already have contemplated such plans.

Sir Francis Fremantle

Is my right hon. Friend in touch with the Board of Education as regards school holidays?
