HC Deb 25 February 1943 vol 387 c274
7. Mr. Mander

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will arrange, in connection with the call-up of women who are qualified nurses and midwives, that they shall be directed, without option, to their own jobs, in view of the great shortage at the present time?

Mr. Bevin

The question whether or in what circumstances, qualified nurses or midwives should be directed to particular work, is one on which I hope shortly to have the advice of the National Advisory Council on the Recruitment and Distribution of Nurses and Midwives, which has just been established.

Major Lyons

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware of the great shortage in many hospitals, and is he in consultation with the Minister of Health to see that the public interest is looked after?

Mr. Bevin

It is for that reason that, in conjunction with my right hon. Friend, I established a Nursing Council, so as to get the thing dealt with on a national and an organised basis.
