HC Deb 25 February 1943 vol 387 cc304-5
62. Dr. Little

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will make more determined efforts to stamp out smuggling between Northern Ireland and Eire, which is on the increase?

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Mr. Assheton)

I have been asked to reply. I assume that my hon. Friend refers to the smuggling of goods from Northern Ireland into Eire, and I can assure him that very determined efforts are made to suppress this traffic. These efforts, I am glad to say, have had favourable results, but I agree that extreme vigilance continues to be required.

Dr. Little

Arising out of that answer, will my hon. Friend have much more drastic steps taken to deal with this traffic, as the very hearse and coffin have been utilised to bring dutiable goods across the border?

Mr. Assheton

Any information the hon. Member can give us will be investigated.
