HC Deb 18 February 1943 vol 386 c1928
25. Mr. Hannah

asked the President of the Board of Education what steps should be taken by a local education authority desirous of establishing a school base on the lines set forth in the scheme submitted to him by the chairman of the Society for Research in Education in order to obtain an adequate site; and whether, in such a matter, the Board of Education will act in co-operation with the Minister of Town and Country Planning?

The President of the Board of Education (Mr. Butler)

The steps to be taken by local education authorities to obtain sites for school premises are well known, and if an authority should wish to secure an especially large site with a view to grouping upon it a number of educational buildings, this would present no difficulty in principle. As regards the second part of the Question, local education authorities are required to consult the local planning authorities before submitting a proposal to acquire a site for educational purposes. Arrangements have already been made for the regional planning officers of the Ministry and the Board's inspectors to work in close association in securing provision for educational premises in a town and country planning scheme.

Mr. Hannah

Do the Government favour the general principles of school bases?

Mr. Butler

Certainly, Sir.
