HC Deb 18 February 1943 vol 386 cc1946-7
74. Mr. Evelyn Walkden

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is now in a position to announce the changes in the scheme to supply equipment and clothing for officers of the Army?

The Financial Secretary to the War Office (Mr. Arthur Henderson)

I am afraid that this question is still under investigation, but my hon. Friend will appreciate that it is not a simple problem and it must be carefully considered in all its aspects.

Mr. Walkden

Why is the War Office holding up the execution of a promise given in good faith by the Lord President over three months ago? Does the hon. and learned Gentleman recognise that certain firms are charging for mass production of garments bespoke or retail prices? Cannot he attend to that urgent problem on behalf of the officers of the Army?

Mr. Henderson

The War Office is not holding up the matter. Certain investigations have had to be undertaken. They are not yet completed.

Mr. Walkden

Will my hon. and learned Friend be able to make a statement next week if I put down a Question?

Mr. Henderson

I cannot make a promise that it will be next week.
