HC Deb 17 February 1943 vol 386 c1725
35. Mr. Edmund Harvey

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the native courts in Nigeria enforce contracts for the pawning of children and young persons as security for debt?

Colonel Stanley

As I informed my hon. Friend in reply to his Question on 27th January, the pawning of persons in any form is illegal in Nigeria. Any cases which come to light are dealt with in the British Courts; and the review of native court cases by officials of the Nigerian Administration ensures that any cases into which pawning enters in any shape or form would be brought to light.
