HC Deb 17 February 1943 vol 386 c1726
40. Mr. Riley

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has yet received the Report of the Commission of Inquiry into Conditions in the Bahamas; and whether he is aware that the recommendations of the Commission have already been published in the Bahamas newspapers?

Colonel Stanley

As I informed the hon. Member for the English Universities (Mr. Harvey) on 27th January, I propose that the Report should be published in this country as soon as I have received the despatch containing the Governor's observations. I understand that the despatch is now in transit, and I hope that it will arrive here shortly.

Mr. Riley

Is the Minister aware that the Report has been published in the Bahamas newspapers, as stated in the Question? Is that in accordance with the usual practice?

Colonel Stanley

Yes, Sir, it was published there as soon as it was received, as I think I informed the House at the time. Unfortunately delays have occurred in the transport of this Report to this country.

Mr. Harvey

Will the Report be accompanied by the decisions of the Government on its recommendations?

Colonel Stanley

I hope to be in a position to make some statement.
