HC Deb 16 February 1943 vol 386 cc1568-9
12. Mr. Hewlett

asked the Secretary of State for War whether his attention has been called to the increasing loss of life among members of the Army by road accidents; whether investigation is made in all such cases to ascertain whether these were preventable; and what is the total estimate of the casualties in all such accidents in the last six months for which figures are available?

Sir J. Grigg

There are no figures available of fatal road accidents to members of the Army except where a War Department vehicle was involved. These show that there were in the last nine months of 1942 less than three-quarters of the fatal accidents that there were in those months of 1941. In accordance with King's Regulations a Court of Inquiry is invariably held in the case of a fatal accident.
