HC Deb 16 February 1943 vol 386 c1590
49. Sir R. Young

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that teachers who pay Income Tax monthly when in employment are called upon immediately after retirement to pay a lump sum based on the previous year's income; that this places some of them in a difficult financial position; and whether he can arrange some method whereby continued monthly payments can be made?

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Kingsley Wood)

In such a case as that to which my hon. Friend refers the collector of taxes would be prepared to accept payment, of Income Tax by instalments if payment in one sum would give rise to hardship.

Sir R. Young

Does that mean that proportionate payments may be made during the year that they retire?

Sir K. Wood

If my hon. Friend will advise his constituents to get into touch with the collector, I have no doubt that a satisfactory remedy will be arrived at.
