HC Deb 16 February 1943 vol 386 cc1570-1
15. Mr. McNeil

asked the Secretary of State for War whether to simplify administration, allay irritation and avoid delay, he will end the present system by which newly-appointed officers apply for officers' camp kit comprising bed, bucket, wash-basin, &c, when they reach the unit to which they are posted, and ensure instead that this equipment is issued from the Officer Cadet Training Unit at which the officer qualifies?

Sir J. Grigg

The suggestion of my hon. Friend has been considered, but I am afraid is not practicable as O.C.T.U.'s have neither the staff nor the accommodation to deal with the issue of camp kit.

Mr. McNeil

Would not the right hon. Gentleman agree that it would be better, rather than spreading this stuff throughout the country where it is frequently inaccessible to anybody who wants it in a hurry, to store it at the O.C.T.U. units at which the officers qualify?

Sir J. Grigg

No, Sir. I think the difficulty is mainly one of supply and not of faulty administration. As the supply of equipment is improving, I hope that the difficulties will soon end.
