HC Deb 09 February 1943 vol 386 cc1154-5
19. Sir William Davison

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power, in connection with his appeals to burn less coal whether he will issue an official statement as to the risk incurred by persons who are able to burn wood logs, either green or dry, owing to the highly inflammable resinous deposit in the chimney?

The Minister of Fuel and Power (Major Lloyd George)

I am in consultation with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research on the subject, and I expect to be in a position to issue an official statement shortly.

Sir W. Davison

Can my right hon. and gallant Friend state whether any amelioration of this can be achieved by burning coal with logs, and whether anything can be done in the way of scraping chimneys in order to relieve what is alleged to be a danger?

Major Lloyd George

As far as I know, there is no greater danger in burning wood than there is in burning coal, but I am having further inquiries made. From correspondence I have seen, I believe that if chimneys can be swept twice a year, there is no danger.
