HC Deb 09 February 1943 vol 386 cc1159-60
34. Sir H. Williams

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food why bread may be delivered daily to a catering establishment or institution, to the Armed Forces or to Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes, while such delivery can be effected three times a week only-to private houses; and whether, in the interests of economy, he will apply the provisions of paragraph 7 of the Bread (Control and Maximum Prices) Order, 1943, to all establishments and firms?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food (Mr. Mabane)

The provisions of Article 7 of the Bread (Control and Maximum Prices) Order, 1943, are intended to apply to the delivery of the few loaves of bread consumed daily in the private household. My hon. Friend will appreciate that corresponding economies in transport and man-power could not be effected by applying the same methods to the delivery of wholesale quantities to the Armed Forces or catering establishments, even if the difficulties of storage could be overcome.
