HC Deb 03 February 1943 vol 386 c890
39. Mr. David Adams

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can now say whether the liaison officer has been appointed in the Panama Canal area where labourers recruited by the United States Government from Jamaica are employed, who complained of bad food, housing and ill-usage; whether he is aware of recent complaints that the wages of these labourers contracted for were not being paid; and what steps he is taking to remedy these matters?

Colonel Stanley

Yes, Sir. An officer has been appointed as Labour Representative of the Jamaica Government in this area: and it will be for him to investigate any complaints made by Jamaican labourers there.
