HC Deb 02 February 1943 vol 386 cc734-5
22. Mr. Wakefield

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that private and personal letters written by civilians in this country to soldiers serving in this country are being opened and read by the military authorities before receipt; and will be state what instructions he has issued on this matter?

Sir J. Grigg

No instructions have been issued by the War Office for any letters from civilians in this country addressed to soldiers serving in this country to be opened and read by any military authorities. If my hon. Friend will let me have further details of the case, I shall have inquiries made into the facts.

Mr. Davidson

Is the Minister aware that a number of those letters contain very definite protests from sailors and soldiers at being refused the right to discuss the Beveridge Report?
