HC Deb 16 December 1943 vol 395 cc1661-2
13. Mr. Shinwell

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that in the district of Thornley and Wheatley Hill, County Durham, there are several men who have been rendered unemployed owing to bronchial complaints; that all these men were coal hewers; that they applied for surface work which was refused; that they are now receiving unemployment benefit which is inadequate to maintain themselves and their families; and whether he will take all possible steps to find suitable work for them and others similarly placed?

Mr. Bevin

I am having inquiries made and will write to my hon. Friend as soon as possible.

Mr. Shinwell

Will my right hon. Friend be good enough to expedite the inquiries?

Mr. Bevin

Yes, I have given instructions.
