HC Deb 15 December 1943 vol 395 cc1526-7
18. Mr. E. P. Smith

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, whether he will take steps to have the Maclise panoramas of Trafalgar and Waterloo in the Royal Gallery competently restored and adequately lighted.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works (Mr. Hicks)

The Maclise frescoes were last given expert treatment in 1936. I am advised that, except for some surface dirt, the frescoes are generally in good condition. Arrange- ments for surface cleaning will be made at the earliest convenient opportunity. The lighting is on a wartime economy standard.
